TORONTO - February 28, 2012 - Slacker Canadian Music Week is pleased to announce Brittany King as the recipient of the 2012 Allan Waters Young Broadcaster of the Year Award in Memory of Steve Young. The award will be presented during the Radio Consultants Round Table Breakfast on Saturday, March 24, 2012 at 9:00 a.m., Fairmont Royal York Hotel, Toronto.
Brittany King is the Midday On-air Host and Social Media Administrator at Bell Media's Kool-FM in Victoria, BC. For two years she has maintained the Number One Midday Show among females 25-54, spurred by an ongoing segment with her grandmother - aka her Italian NONNA. Imagine an 87-year-old thickly accented grandmother singing Katy Perry's “Teenage Dream” on the air. Even when not on the air, Brittany is known for the digital recorder she carries around everywhere she goes, gathering audio for her show.
Aside from being heard, Brittany is one of few personalities who can also be seen on camera, as an occasional weather personality on CTV News and host of the community events calendar “On The Island” airing on CTV Vancouver Island.
A community activist, Brittany has captured the hearts and minds of thousands of people on Vancouver Island with her 1100-kilometre bike trek as the media rider for the Canadian Cancer Society's 2011 Cops for Cancer - Tour De Rock. With the help of 107.3 KOOL FM, CTV-Vancouver Island, and CFAX 1070, she personally raised $102,000.00. She can be found volunteering twice per week at the YMCA/YWCA helping kids learn about arts and crafts and most recently began training and fundraising for the Oak Bay KOOL Half Marathon supporting The Help Fill a Dream Foundation.
The Steve Young Award was created in the memory of its namesake to honour a rising star in the Canadian broadcast industry. Steve Young was among the most popular of those who consult radio, and was always prepared to advise and mentor young broadcasters. This award reflects the support he offered so many. The recipient is chosen by “The Friends of Steve Young”, a Canadian broadcaster committee, and is awarded annually to a broadcaster under the age of thirty.
To participate in the Radio Consultants Round Table Breakfast, attendees must be registered delegates of Slacker Canadian Music Week. Registration is accessible at http://www.cmw.net/.
